How does this effect the American economy?
If you haven't heard, early Sunday morning an earthquake sturck outside of CONCEPCION, Chile. It was a 8.8 on the richter scale! That means it is 10 times the size of the one that hit in Haiti just over a month ago. Because of the depth of the shake, and the structure of the buildings, as well as other factors, Chili did not experience as much devistation as Haiti did. However many families have been seperated and people are still searching for loved ones. They will need help from all around the world.
So... how does this effect Americans and their economy? Will it help it or hurt it? Explain your answer.
In a sense Americans will be affected in the good and bad way since the airports are going to win profit from Chilis that want to go to their country, then of course if the US needs to give any prime necessity (meaning, help) to Chili like food, water, medicine...that means working longer and more to sustain another country that is in need! DX so, in a sense the profit and no profit are kind of balanced....

To Americans themselves, it will affect them negatively. I mean it is not usual for someone to feel content about such a disaster. Due to the that, many people will want to help therefore they will begin buying things to help and cooperate with people in Chile. This obviously moves the economy. The point of a recession is the lack of money, hence the low interest rates to impulse spending. *( from the fed)
ReplyDeleteFrom another view, would imports from Chile be affected? The second biggest supplier of Copper to the US is Chile, ( Canada being the first) . That would probably bring the price up for a while if Copper mines were affected ( don't know for sure) , but other than that it would give other countries a chance while Chile recovers.
Ok... i was searching online to find something about Chile and the American's economy, but I found something really interesting. You probably already heard about this.
ReplyDeleteAccording to scientificamerican.com the earth's axis shifted by about 8 centimeters because of the earthquake!
Such a shift would have the effect of shaking as much as 1.26 microseconds off of the Earth's daily rotation
"Those microseconds (each one millionth of a second) might not sound like a lot, and they probably will not change your sleep patterns or birthday, but they do accumulate. And as such a change will be permanent, over the decades and eons, it will eventually amount to a trickle of "lost" time. (If the scientists' early estimates are on target, this quake's impact, however, will take about 130,500 years to shear off a full minute.)"

Back to the american economy:
I believe that since the americans had to help Haiti during their earthquake, they are probably forced to help Chile too. Well, not forced, because maybe they want to help, but helping means that they have to put a lot of money and if another earthquake happens to occur, which I hope not, the americans would probably help. So in other words, every earthquake that occurs will affect the americans in some way.

ReplyDeleteThese inccident will surely help the us economy in a reason that people will start bying things to send to chile, or even though people from chile will start traveling to other country, or people from outside the chile will go to search for their family members. Another thing is that citizens of chile will start bying things fromoutside the country to construct damage scenerie. i will say that chile wont receive the same help Haiti did just because chile is a country which is prepared to recive these kind oF seismic and that chile is not as poor as haiti is . these will surely help the u.s meaning that the u.s will help chile ...
Chile’s earthquake that happened last Sunday morning will bring some pro and cons to the US economy.
ReplyDelete(Positive) – As Nicole said “this incident will surely help the US economy in a reason that people will start bring things to send to Chile”, it’s true.
(Negative) – They have to help them, the same way they helped Haiti. Helping is not the something negative but it will bring the economy down.
Chile's earthquake was another "boom" to our world, first Haiti with its 200,000 deaths, than near Japan, and now Chile.
ReplyDeletewe have to consider, however, that Chile is not the same as Haiti, it is a much more developed country, that wont need as much help as Haiti did and still does. U.S. economy wont be affected in the negative way in the least, of course, there is still some residues of the crisis but helping never does harm to anything. Naturally, some money will go out, but better for it to go to chile than on some nuclear bombing testing, no?
In other words, as other classmates previously said, people will buy, making money navigate around. It is sad however, that things such as an earthquake are needed to start moving money around and take it out "of under the matress."

american will have airports full of people and they will win money in AIRPORT and they will help chile why not if they helped haiti, and people the world is coming to an end, 2012,.

ehh. The quake in chili will affect the American economy in a negative way because people will start buying large amounts of things to send to Chili. Not as negative as it was with Haiti, because Chili is not poor, like Haiti. bye.
ReplyDeleteIn ways it helps the united states economy, but it can also hurt it. The prices of salmon increase due to the massive destruction of boats and harbors. Luckily the copper industry wasn't badly affected because it is located north to Santiago and the earthquake was worst in the south. the earthquake also leads to higher win production due to the declining value of the U.S dollar. Also the red cross gave 50,000 from the disaster fund. Although the U.S helped by giving 25 satellite phones, they wont be giving large amounts of money because Chile's economy is very stable and even after the earthquake they have 11 billion to use for disasters and the earthquakes costs are 30 billion so they aren't to bad like in Haiti.
ReplyDeleteBy the way this is maria Adams i don't know why it doesn't show
ReplyDeleteI do believe such natural disaster affects the economy of a powerful nation as it is the United States. Every where you go money moves and in today's economy it moves fast; with such natural disaster people are going to buy stuff in order to help, by buying they are moving the economy, but in the long term such earthquake will not have a permanent impact on the us economy.
ReplyDeleteHonestly speaking for the most part anything which happens in this world will effect the American economy, that is how involved the US is with the world. The fact that the US is donating items and money is setting them back since everything they are giving should be used for their own better use.
ReplyDeleteIt's difficult to explain how a country is donating when they need every item and cent they possibly need.
There is a saying which is usually used for individuals which i believe can be used also with a country: in order to help others on must help oneself first.
how can one succeed if the items they need is being transported to another in need...necessities for the country could be met if the country providing help is stable but until then they would both progress slower then if the US would stable first and then provide help.
I dont think the earthquake in Chile is gonna affect the US economy in a noticible way. People arent gonna go buy stuff and send them to Chile like others said because that is not necessary. The earthquake in chile didnt even rich a thousand deaths when the hurricane in Haiti killed over 200thousands. Chiles building are built in the knowledge of sismic movement since the country has already faced this before. Like Maria Adams said, the only request Chile gave the US was the one for satellite phones. I dont think that sending a few phones will affect the economy in a noticible way. The fishing industry and agricultural industry were the only ones really affected so maybe the prices of fish or salmons like maria said could increase but other than that i dont think the US needs to worry about.Chile is autosufficient and the US should worry about Haiti because they really need the help. Plus..like Jessica said, its better to spend the money on helping than in nuclear testing and all the other unecessary things that money is being spent on.
ReplyDeleteOOPS lol..corrections:
ReplyDelete- Reach not rich.
- Earthquake not hurricane.
- Seismic not sismic.
- noticiable not noticible.
ehh. Alejandro's words made me think better. what he said is quite right, now i agree with what he said. :p
